- Admin History: Henry Meadows Ltd was founded in 1920 to manufacture high quality 3-speed gearboxes at the works in Park Lane. In 1922, petrol engines were added to the products manufactured there. They supplied many famous companies such as lagonda, Invicta, Lea Francis, Bean and Frazer-Nash with engines ranging from 15 to 270 b.p.h. The most popular engine was the 'H-Litre' four cylinder 'Type4' ED engine. During the war another factory in Cannock Road was built next to the existing premises supplying engines for tanks and other military vehicles. In 1947, the first Meadows diesel engines were produced which particularly suited the Guy Motors 'Invincible' and 'Victory' commercial vehicles. Other uses for the engines included driving pumps, welding equipment and compressors. Marine engine were also manufactured around this time. It was also at this time that the company worked closely with D. Wickham & Co. Ltd of Ware, who produced diesel engines for railway locomotives. In 1957, a small hand made car called the 'Frisky' was produced at the Park Lane works. This was not very successful as it could not compete with its mass produced contemporaries. By 1960, they had become part of the Associated British Engineering Company and eventually closed. Most of the buildings were demolished and only a small part of the original premises now survives.
