- Admin History: Walter Wilkins founded Servis Limited in 1929 to manufacture washing machines. After touring washing machine factories in the USA in 1930, Wilkins attempted to perfect his own prototype washing machine. This was launched at the Ideal Home Exhibition. During the Second World War, washing machine production was halted while the factory was used to produce ammunition boxes.
Following the death of Walter Wilkins in 1946, his widow Louisa and his four sons took over the running of the company. By the early 1950s a new factory was built at Darlaston Road, King's Hill.
In 1995, the workforce was greatly reduced, and about half the employees lost their jobs. The factory was eventually closed on 2 April 1999. - Extent: 1 item
